Prof. Prasenjit Das Purkayastha

In 2013, the seniors of a leading Market Research agency were astonished to notice an abnormal piece of internal data. A high 22.69% of their fresh recruits from B-Schools mentioned “we joined the MR industry as we found the subject very interesting – the way it was taught in our B-School”. Very coincidentally, Prasenjit Das Purkayastha (PD) had taken a break from his hectic Market Research career, to teach MR in B-Schools, the previous year.

As a student, PD was passionate about Mathematics. In school, he taught Math to his batch-mates and seniors… and at times fought with them, trying to convince how interesting the subject was. He studied B.Sc (Math with Comp Sc) and M.Sc (Applied Math) in Jadavpur University. After a PGDM (Marketing) from GIM, Goa, his entry to industry was as a quantitative Market Research professional in a multinational MR agency.

PD worked in MR agencies for more than 13 years, of which 8 years were with ACNielsen. He became the youngest SBU Head and Associate Director there. He later worked with IMRB International as a Group Business Director.

While working with ACNielsen, PD’s first weekend teaching assignment was at XLRI for a MDP in 2002. With 4 yrs of work experience, weighing 48kgs, when he arrived at the Admin Office, he was shown the door by Admin staff saying XAT Forms were not being distributed! The MDP finally went well and PD became a regular visitor to XLRI in the subsequent years.

From 2012, PD moved to independent Consulting / Training and started teaching Market Research and related areas in B-Schools. He is known for his innovative pedagogy and creative methods in simulating data-driven Marketing situations in his classes. He is teaching/has taught at Praxis Business School, Kolkata (where he is an Adjunct Professor), GIM-Goa, XLRI-Jamshedpur, IIM-Calcutta and IBM-Jadavpur University.
